A vortex shedding flow meter is a reliable device used for measuring the flow rate of gases, liquids, and steam in various industrial applications. It is commonly used in industries such as water treatment, oil and gas, chemical processing, and HVAC systems due to its accuracy, durability, and ability to handle high temperatures and pressures.
How Vortex Shedding Flow Meters Work
Vortex shedding flow meters operate on the principle of vortex shedding—a phenomenon where an obstruction in the fluid path creates a series of alternating vortices as the fluid flows around it. These vortices form at a predictable rate, directly proportional to the flow rate of the fluid. In a vortex flow meter, a bluff body (a fixed object in the flow path) creates these vortices as fluid passes over it.
A sensor downstream of the bluff body detects the vortices’ frequency, which is used to calculate the flow rate based on a pre-established relationship between vortex frequency and flow velocity. The vortex flow meter provides an accurate reading without moving parts, reducing the need for frequent maintenance.
Features and Benefits of Vortex Shedding Flow Meters
- High Accuracy: Vortex meters provide precise flow measurements, especially for gases and steam, making them ideal for critical applications.
- Broad Applicability: Suitable for a wide range of fluids, including water, chemicals, air, and steam.
- No Moving Parts: With no mechanical components, vortex flow meters require minimal maintenance and have a long operational life.
- Wide Range of Operating Conditions: They handle high temperatures and pressures, allowing for use in demanding industrial environments.
- Direct Mass Flow Measurement: Vortex meters can be configured to measure mass flow directly, which is valuable in processes requiring precise mass flow control.
