What is Orifice Plate?

An orifice plate is a type of flow measurement device used primarily in differential pressure flowmeters to measure the flow rate of fluids. This simple yet effective device consists of a flat plate with a precisely sized hole (orifice) cut into it, which creates a flow restriction in a pipe. As fluid flows through the pipe and encounters the orifice plate, it accelerates through the opening, causing a drop in pressure that can be measured to determine the flow rate.

How Orifice Plates Work

  • Flow Restriction: When a fluid flows through a pipe equipped with an orifice plate, the fluid velocity increases as it passes through the smaller area of the orifice. According to the Bernoulli principle, this increase in velocity leads to a decrease in pressure at the orifice.

  • Differential Pressure Measurement: Pressure taps are placed before and after the orifice plate to measure the pressure at both points. The pressure difference (or differential pressure) is directly related to the flow rate. This relationship is mathematically described by the orifice equation, which calculates flow rate based on the orifice size, fluid density, and the differential pressure.

By utilizing the principles of differential pressure measurement, they provide accurate flow data across various applications in industries such as oil and gas, water treatment, chemical processing, and power generation. Their widespread use and proven effectiveness make orifice plates a staple in modern flow measurement technology.
